The Coolest Thing Just Happened

April 24th, 2008

On Sunday my boy Ryan turns 5 years old.  Today I went out and bought him (sshhh – its a birthday gift!) his first leather baseball mitt and (aluminum) bat!  Its hard to describe to those who might not be fans of baseball, but it felt like a rite of passage getting him his first official equipment.  He likes playing ball of all types, throws lefty (=meal ticket baby!), and swings a confident whiffle bat.  But something about getting the actual gear for him made me feel quite proud and excited.  What is not so clear is whether or not he will be as excited as I am.  As a parent, I know I have to let go of any attachment to his likes & dislikes just give him the choices to make and support his chosen path.

This was a marvelous experience I won’t soon forget.  I’m such an old softie…

The video for Margaret

The first track on the Junior CD is “Margaret”.  Here is the video (created by Gregg) now finally posted on YouTube for the world to see for eternity:

Trader Vic’s

April 9th, 2008

When Trader Vic’s restaurant in the Chicago Palmer House hotel closed a few years ago, it left a void for umbrella-drink consumers throughout the Midwest. Known as the originator of the Mai Tai, Trader Vic’s sure made an awfully good version of their signature drink.  Rumor has it another Chicago location is being sought.

Last fall a new Trader Vic’s location (there are 8 in the U.S., 19 more world wide) opened in the new Planet Hollywood Resort (formerly Aladdin) casino in Las Vegas.  I missed out on going there during my recent to lovely Las Vegas, but I hear they have a patio overlooking The Strip.  Maybe next time…

In today’s Las Vegas Review-Journal, Norm Clarke (the Irv Kupicnet of Vegas) reveals this tidbit:

“Hugh Hefner‘s eccentric dining habits were on display over the weekend. Hefner, whose routine includes faxing instructions to his restaurants of choice, ordered his usual at Trader Vic’s on Saturday. A regular at Trader Vic’s in Beverly Hills, Hef ordered chop suey, mashed potatoes, a tall glass of milk and a Mai Tai.”

A new section: Things I Like

April 4th, 2008

For years I wasn’t a big fan of Starbucks coffee.  Seemed too strong to me.  Then in about 2000 or so, I took a liking to it and haven’t looked back. Stopping at Starbucks is an infrequent treat but always enjoyable.  Ryan like a cookie from there once in a while too!

Now I welcome them as a new sponsor for my websites…

Happy birthday, Junior

April 1st, 2008

“Junior,” the Slugs last (or most recent?) album was released officially on April 1, 2000, a fitting date to be sure.  In support of the Junior CD, we played more than 40 shows between March-August of that year, all but one (Iowa City) in Northern Illinois. Being the ageing rockers we were/are, touring was out of the question at that time. We played many memorable shows including House of Blues in Chicago, Borders Books on State Street, Taste of Chicago, and many clubs, festivals, etc. We did radio performances on various stations including WCKG, WGN Radio (Christmas special end of 2000), and a full one-hour of Slugs on WXRT with Richard Milne. On Halloween of 2000, we played live on the WGN Morning News – in a studio where Dag & Gregg visited their dad at work many times in their youth. Songs from this record were subsequently used in the television series “Felicity”, which of course is always a thrill to hear our music on TV!
